How to be a newbie

I’ve decided that everytime I learn something new from an Adia the Sewing Machine and I faux pas, I’m going to add it here, right here in this post; make it a sort of ‘tips for new sewers’ kinda gaff. I mean, tutorial of sorts…

1. Don’t focus on the needle when guiding fabric through your machine; it’ll most likely lead to a wibble-wobble-wibble-wobble line. Make something else a focal point. I invested in a magnetic seam guide but a lot of people (ie with computerised machines) don’t like these. Does your machine have a gridded metal plate? Use it.

2. Ready to sew? Lowered your footer? Double check. There’s nothing worse than machine sewing something and finding this almighty spaghetti mess on the reverse side once you’ve ‘finished’.
